GENETICS:THE SCIENCE OF HEREDITARY
William bateson coined the word GENETICS in 1906.We may define as the study of heredity and variation. Its principles account for the following :
*the diversity of organisms
*the driving force behind evolution
And the adaptation of a species to its environment. They explain that it is s3xual reproduction that provides the opportunities for a species to adapt to its environment, and hence evolve.
*PIONEERS IN GENETICS
The basic laws of genetics were laid down by Gregor mendel, an Austrian monk in 1866.the danish botanist, johannsen, called the factors' that transmitted Mendel's characters as genes in 1909.in 1912,The American geneticist, Thomas Morgan, showed that genes we're carried on chromosomes.
The scientists who study genetics are known as genetics. They carry out breeding experiments to follow the inheritance patterns of observable characteristics. The most suitable organisms for these experiments are the ones that
*show observable discontinuous features or characteristics
*can be kept in the laboratory;and
*will breed rapidly, producing many offspring in short time.
HEREDITARY AND VARIATION
Hereditary is the transmission of inherited characters from parent to offspring through genes. It is responsible for the similarities, as well as the small differences or variation between parent and offspring and among individual species. The similarities due to the genes an offspring inherits from its parents ;
The variation is due to a new combination of genes. If the variation makes the offspring more suited to its environment then it stands a better chance of surviving and reproducing to pass on its genes to the next generation
