1. Believe and myth: They are believe to have control and guidance on the people living n a community, they are known to have determination and control of the society eg. Esan people of the southern part of Nigeria.
2.Sign: Masquerades do not appear on a daily basis, but rather their appearance signifies the return of the ancestor to the human form or when the society are in need of masquerades power to control a problem within the society.
3.Entertainment: Whenever a masquerade appears they are seen putting on mask and holding objects, music and dance either to scae the audience or entertain them.
4.social politics control: While the esan people where having problems with socio-political conflicts, the spirits were required to preside over negotiation and arbitration of such cases.
